"Operation: R.A.I.N.B.O.W.S." is the second story in the twelfth episode of Season 1 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It aired on February 28, 2003 on Cartoon Network.

Summary[]

The boss of Rainbow Monkeys Inc. uses Numbuh 3 to find real Rainbow Monkeys for him.

Plot[]

The episode begins with the opening of the Rainbow Monkey store. Among the people waiting for the store to open is Numbuh 3, who has the scent for Rainbow Monkeys. In the store, the opener of the store is Mr. Mogul, and he has an assistant named Simon. They make an announcement to the crowd of a brand new Rainbow Monkey and they see Numbuh 3. Numbuh 3 then started to sense the new Rainbow Monkeys coming out of a truck and broke into a box and saw the new Rainbow Monkeys. The two have discovered that Numbuh 3 has the scent for Rainbow Monkeys and decided to do something devious and dastardly and the next morning while Sector V was asleep, Mr. Mogul and Simon had left a Rainbow Monkey with a propeller in front of Kuki’s room as bait and took off into a Rainbow Monkey ship with Mr. Mogul and Simon in it and questions her to direct them to Rainbow Monkey Island. Mr. Mogul then tricked Numbuh 3 into thinking that Mr. Mogul and Simon want to find the Rainbow Monkeys to give them a residual check. Kuki decided to confirm on it and she felt for it and she agreed to help. Then she laughed along with Mr. Mogul and Simon even though Numbuh 3 didn’t know why they were laughing.

The trio ride in a Rainbow Monkey Plane to Rainbow Monkey Island, which is a tropical island in the middle of the ocean. They felt delighted. They then wear special Rainbow Monkeys that has a retractable propeller from the head, like the one from earlier, in order to fly around the island. Numbuh 3 uses her nose to find the Rainbow Monkeys.

Numbuh 3, Mr. Mogul, and Simon finally land in a clearing, but there are no Rainbow Monkeys around. Kuki sniffed and sniffed and saw one. The Rainbow Monkeys eventually appear around them, which suggests that the reason why no one ever saw a real Rainbow Monkey is because they were able to turn invisible. Numbuh 3 saw a rainbow monkey hide in a bush and comforted it and told it to come out and it looked beautiful. Then Numbuh 3 gave the Rainbow Monkey a big Rainbow Monkey Friendship Hug as more Rainbow Monkeys appeared and surrounded her. Mr. Mogul and Simon drop a net from the plane to catch them and lock them and Numbuh 3 in cages. They reveal to her of their real motive, to sell real Rainbow Monkeys. They also arrogantly give Kuki the Rainbow Monkey she used to fly around the island.

Numbuh 3 (while held hostage) knew it was her fault until she discovers that the Rainbow Monkey's blades could be used to cut the bars of the cages. She uses this to her advantage to free herself and the Rainbow Monkeys. Meanwhile, Mr. Mogul and Simon were telling the pilot of the plane how they tricked Numbuh 3 into searching for the real Rainbow Monkeys for him and they laughed and laughed themselves silly and Mr. Mogul mocked Numbuh 3’s phrase. Suddenly, Numbuh 3 comes in. Not knowing the Rainbow Monkey Toy's blades could cut through the bars, Mr. Mogul says she'll be going back to her cage permanently. Now in command, Numbuh 3 came with the Rainbow Monkeys to come into the cockpit as they beat up Mr. Mogul, Simon, and the pilot. Numbuh 3 takes over the controls, and Mogul, Simon, and the pilot were thrown into the sea in an inflatable dinghy. Back at the treehouse when Sector V is having breakfast, Numbuh 1 notices Numbuh 3's absence. Knowing her well, Numbuh 5 responds that Numbuh 3 wanted to go get some new Rainbow Monkey stuff. To answer Numbuh 4's question, Sector V is surprised to see that their teammate has brought back a Rainbow Monkey aircraft.

  • This is Mr. Mogul and Simon's debut episode.
  • The other teammates of Sector V have never met Mr. Mogul and Simon personally.
  • Numbuh 2 has no dialogue in this episode.
  • This is Numbuh 3's first character-specific episode.
  • Numbuh 3 doesn't wear her signature green outfit throughout the whole episode.
  • With the possible exception of Sector V's treehouse, no 2x4 Technology is present in this episode.
  • Numbuh 3 is shown to be able to smell Rainbow Monkey dolls and apes.
  • Mr. Warburton was especially proud of the acronym for this episode.[1]
  • This is the first appearance of "real" Rainbow Monkeys and Rainbow Monkey Island.
    • Unlike their future appearances, the monkeys' fur is shown to change color.

  • Mr. Mogul's design and speech pattern seem to be a reference to the late actor W. C. Fields.
  • This episode might be parodying Tarzan with Mr. Mogul as Clayton and Numbuh 3 playing both Tarzan and Jane.
  • The Rainbow Monkey plane resembles a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier from Marvel Comics.
  • Rainbow Monkey Island may also be a parody of Skull Island from King Kong.

Errors/Goofs[]

  • When Numbuh 3 starts smelling the Rainbow Monkeys doll while lying in her bed, the purple Rainbow Monkey on her shirt is missing.
  • The big white spot on Numbuh 3's Rainbow Monkey is gone in the shot when she pushes on its belly button to activate the propeller on its head to escape her cage.
  • The brest pockets on Mr. Mogul's shirt is missing in the cockpit scene with him and the others making fun of Numbuh 3.
  • The amount of bars intact and the bar Numbuh 3 is cutting on the monkey cage is different between the panning shot and the close-up shot.
