Information[]

Summary[]

A epidemic of conjunctivitis (pink-eye) has taken several victims. Hoagie must investigate if the cases are coincidental or if a certain nurse is causing them.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Hoagie setting up a "detective's office" in the janitor's office, narrating the events of the entire afternoon.

Earlier this morning, Hoagie, wearing a detective hat, a tie, and packs around his side, was relaxing in his "detective office" when it is really a janitor's closet. Fanny comes in, both to ask why Hoagie isn't in math class and to get paper towels for the girl's bathroom. When Hoagie refers to Fanny as "toots" in his reply, she gets sent over the edge. Realizing his mistake, Hoagie frantically attempts to retract what he said, but Fanny furiously beats him up and shoves him in the wastebasket and proceeds to retrieve the paper towels. As Hoagie gets himself out of the wastebasket, he wonders if Fanny came for help, and just after he thinks this, he hears Fanny crying out for help, which sends him running down where a bunch of other school students were amongst the kids was Hoagie's old friend Joe Balooka, who is described as a bad cop and being Hogie's partner prior to joining in the Kids Next Door.

After sending the students back to class, he and Hoagie agreed to look at Fanny, who appears to have come down with pinkeye (which, has sand crust all around her eyes). Joe believes that Hoagie had something to do with the attack since Fanny was with him prior. Nurse Claiborne arrives on the scene and takes Numbuh 86 away in her medical bed. Hoagie complements the nurse for arriving on time and for the apple crumble. As the nurse takes Fanny away, Hoagie realizes that it's been the thirteenth case of students with pinkeye. Joe warns Hoagie to stay out of the business because it is none of his concern since he left the force.

Hoagie returns back to his office, recapping the connection between the suspect who is giving the students pinkeye and the resources the suspect obtained, only to discover the office being ransacked including the apple crumble. Before Hoagie was about to put the pieces of the puzzle together, someone shot him with a water balloon, fortunately, the water balloon missed, hitting his shoulder. Hoagie chases after who was supposed to be the suspect, only to caught Joe red-handed. Hoagie interrogates him to spill the beans until someone else shot a water balloon at him.

Hoagie fires his water balloon at the suspect but missed and the suspect escaped. When Hoagie checks on Joe, he is disgusted that Joe has the pinkeye too. He takes Joe to Nurse Claiborne's office where she tends the sick student. While Claiborne was treating Joe, Hoagie ended up taking more of the apple crumble, but notices the other students who've been infected with pinkeye missing including Fanny. Claiborne claimed to be in the other room. Numbuh 2 went to the other room to check it out, but she insisted that Hoagie should rather take the crumble and leave the office. Although Hoagie was pleased, he still wanted to check into the other room for the patients. When he opened the door, Hoagie was shocked that all of the students infected with pinkeyes are being excavated of their eye crust and into the giant factory pottery machine, manufacturing more apple crumble, revealing that Nurse Claiborne was the suspect who's been infecting students with pinkeye. Hoagie also realizes that he's been eating the apple crumble because the topping is coated with eye crust from the infected students, much to his utter disgust.

Claiborne plans on selling these apple crumble for the bake sale and has a water balloon gun on Hoagie. However, Joe shot a water balloon at Claiborne, giving her left side of her face with a pinkeye. Claiborne shot a water balloon at Joe and was distracted, allowing Hoagie to call in the KND for backup, so Nurse Claiborne takes the water balloon gun onto herself and shot up into a apple crumble statue that crumbled, allowing her to escape before the KND reinforcement arrives to rescue the victim. Hoagie learns that Joe was working with Claiborne for free crumble in exchange for providing students to the hallways, but insists that he had been unaware that Nurse Claiborne was using eye crust as the topping for her apple crumbles (which Hoagie's willing to believe, mostly because he doesn't think Joe would be smart enough to pull off something like that).

In the end, despite how the apple crumbles were made, Hoagie ate some when he was about to dispose them in the beginning of the episode. After End Transmission, Kuki asks that if the topping was eye crust, she wonders what the filling was, and as if her answer was being made, Fanny, who was sick and being escorted by other members of Sector V, sneezed, revealing a large mush of mucus, indicating that it was made inside of the apple crumble.

Transcript[]

Operation: P.I.N.K.E.Y.E./Transcript

Trivia[]

  • "Pink eye" is another name for "Conjunctivitis", which is an eye disease.
  • This episode has a darker tone, both literally and otherwise, mostly spoofing the cinema style of Noir films.
  • This is Nurse Claiborne and Joe Balooka's first appearances in the series.'
  • This episode is similar to Operation: D.O.G.F.I.G.H.T.; in that it stars Numbuh 2, who faces off against another kid, before the initially supportive adult is revealed to be a villian.
  • This is also the first appearance of Numbuh 41 and Numbuh 43, as well as their only close-up appearance in the series.
  • Hoagie states that a baker's dozen have been infected with pink eye, referring to the fact Nurse Claiborne's Apple Crumbles as baked goods.
  • It's revealed that, prior to joining the KND, Numbuh 2 was a school hall monitor and was even Joe Balooka's partner durng that time.
  • It is revealed that Fanny hates being called "Toots".
  • Hoagie uses a janitor closet for his office and has a Yipper calendar on the wall.
  • Muffy Jenkins is first mentioned in this episode. She goes on to become a recurring character only mentioned and never appearing on screen.
  • Nurse Claiborne is the second villain whose evil plan is to make food from kids. Chester was the first one in Operation: F.A.S.T.-F.O.O.D..
  • Nigel, Kuki, Wallabee, and Abigail don't appear until the end of the episode.
    • Numbuhs 2 and 3 are the only members of Sector V to have any speaking lines in this episode (although Numbuh 3 doesn't speak until the very end of the episode).
  • In the final seconds of the episode, the color grading changes back to like most other episodes.
  • In the ending, it's revealed (or at the least, heavily implied) that Nurse Claiborne uses snot for the filling.
  • The only forms of 2x4 technology to appear in this episode are Hoagie's phone and the harnesses worn by Sector V, none of which are acronym names.
  • This is the second time this season that Sector V sneak out from class to go on a mission, with Operation: F.O.U.N.T.A.I.N. being the first time.

Continuity[]

  • Numbuh 86 goes to the same school as the members of Sector V -- Numbuh 1 had mentioned in Operation: E.N.D. (the episode where Chad Dickson left the KND) that he and Numbuh 86 have been going to school together since at least Kindergarten.
  • Hoagie's love of disgusting food was last shown in Operation: N.O.-P.O.W.U.H..

Pop Culture References[]

  • This episode is a parody of The String of Pearls, a horror novella which later became the basis for the famous musical, Sweeney Todd.
  • This episode may also be inspired by the 1992 Stephen King novel Dolores Claiborne, with characters named Joe and Claiborne; the latter of which is found guilty of murder.
  • Another likely inspiration for this episode is the 1973 film Soylent Green, where humans are secretly turned into food.
  • Joe Balooka's name is a pun on the comic strip character Joe Palooka.

Goofs[]

  • Jennifer Hale was not credited for her voicing of Numbuh 86 and Nurse Claiborne in this episode.
  • The door to Hoagie's office is closed in the first shot of the office but is wide open just before Numbuh 86 appears. The door is then closed again when Numbuh 86 starts beating up Hoagie.
  • Hoagie's shadow is under him after he enters his office following Numbuh 86's pinkeye-attack, but it switches to the wall when Joe Balooka tries to shoot him from behind.
  • When Balooka shoots Hoagie from behind, his shooter is level with Hoagie's head, not his shoulder. Hoagie could have jumped to avoid the shot, but that's not shown in the scene.
  • When Hoagie is about to run into the hall after Joe, the plate on Hoagie's desk is filled with apple crumbles, when it was empty only seconds ago. This is likely because the editors recycled the background from the similar earlier scene when Numbuh 86 was screaming for help.
  • Some of the kids that gathered around Numbuh 86's body is later seen in nurse Claiborne's backroom with pink eye.
  • Even though Hoagie carries a gun holster, it's always empty and he never uses it to hold his water balloon gun.
  • When Hoagie is complimenting Nurse Claiborne's on this week's crumbles, Joe is not holding his crumble.
  • After Claiborne shot Joe from around the corner, her sleeve is brown instead of white.
  • Joe is still wearing his hat after being hit by the water baloon, but the hat is gone after Claiborne escapes.
  • The door to Claiborne's back room is much wider after Hoagie walks through it than it was earlier.
  • Numbuh 86 does not appear in any of the beds in Claiborne's backroom.
  • Claiborne was standing between Hoagie and the exit, but they somehow switched places after she shot herself with the water balloon.
  • The text on Claiborne's door is sometimes white and sometimes black.
  • The tray of crumbles that Claiborne attempted to bribe Hoagie with is empty after all the kids are rescued, while a new full tray of crumbles is now on Claiborne's desk.
  • When Hoagie sits down in Claiborne's chair, there is not a phone next to the tray of crumbles, yet a phone appears there in the next shot.
  • When Numbuh 1 and 4 are helping Numbuh 86 at the end of the episode, they're in Hoagie's janitor office and not nurse Claiborne's office.
  • The door to Claiborne's backroom is closed in the opening scene of Hoagie sitting in her office, but the door is open at the end of the story.
