Information[]

Summary[]

Numbuh 1's father, Monty Uno, forces him to go fishing. But it soon turns into a mission to save his dad from an obsessive and lonely kid who wants Monty all to himself.

Plot[]

The episode begins in Numbuh 1's bedroom in Sector V's treehouse. His alarm rings at 5:00am, and upon waking up, he frantically initiates a launch sequence and flees the treehouse via escape pod. Numbuh 1's escape pod soars into outer space, but once in orbit, it immediately malfunctions and begins to rapidly descent back down to earth. The escape pod crashes into Numbuh 1's garage, where his father, Monty Uno, is waiting for him in a car to take him early morning fishing, to Numbuh 1’s disappointment. Although he has vital Kids Next Door work to tend to, Monty insists that quality time with his father is more important. Numbuh 1 and Monty drive down the highway (slowly) while listening to sousaphone music, to which the young and cranky KND operative mistakenly refers to as the tuba.

Later on, the father and son are in a boat in the middle of the lake. As Monty prepares his fishing equipment, Numbuh 1 becomes increasingly agitated. This is only exacerbated when his sousaphone enthusiast father breaks out a boombox and begins playing the music. When Numbuh 1 chucks the radio into the lake, Monty interprets his act of rage as a sign that he wants to hear the “real thing;” he then takes out a real sousaphone and begins playing live. There are other fathers at the lake with their sons, who begin to take notice of Monty’s playing and begin happily dancing to the music while their sons cry out in disgust. As Numbuh 1 tries to get his attention to stop, he fails to notice a mysterious fishing line from out of nowhere begins reeling the other fathers away and out of sight.

The fed-up operative loses his cool and angrily tells Monty he didn’t want to come here in the first place, and that he’d rather be hanging out with his friends or going on KND missions. Monty, his feelings clearly hurt, tells Numbuh 1 he too can be his friend, but understands why his son doesn’t want to be there. Monty is then immediately distracted by a newspaper that seems to have fallen out of the sky and onto the boat. He grabs it and is reeled away by the mysterious fishing line, leaving a confused and sad Numbuh 1 all alone.

When Monty comes to, he is greeted by a child named Willard Wallace, who begins calling him “dad.” A disoriented Monty then notices that the dock they’re standing on is part of the mountain top that overlooks the lake and is suspended several hundred in the air. Willard explains that he had been fishing for the perfect dad, and Monty happens to fit his vision; he even has a sousaphone just like him. The two of them begin playing a duet. Down below, Numbuh 1 begins to hear the familiar sound of his dad’s sousaphone and notices the dock way up high. He uses his backpack jet to fly up.

After their duet concludes, Willard begs Monty for another, but he explains to the overly-eager child that he needs to go back to the lake and reunite with his actual son, to which Willard briefly loses his cool and aggressively demands another duet. Just then, Numbuh 1 intervenes, but a booby trap suspends Monty upside down by his feet and over an open platform that will drop him into a bed of sharp rocks if let go. Willard challenges Numbuh 1 to a “fight” for Monty. Numbuh 1 accepts the challenge, but the fight in question turns out to be a sousaphone battle.

Despite his inexperience, Numbuh 1 surprisingly holds his own trying to outplay Willard. But alas, Willard’s playing skills come out on top and Numbuh 1 nearly passes out due to blowing into the instrument so much. Willard celebrates his victory. Monty isn’t mad, however; he tells his defeated son that all that matters is he tried. That and he seems to be impressed with Numbuh 1’s astonishing beginner performance. Moments later, Willard’s real father shows up and the young sousaphone player tearfully reunites with him. His dad, annoyed to no end, tells him he only left for a few minutes to buy milk at the grocery store.

Sometime later, back at the lake, Monty and Numbuh 1 return to fishing. This time, Numbuh 1 happily partakes. The episode ends with Monty telling his son that he is considering getting him sousaphone lessons, to his son’s disgust and annoyance.

Trivia[]

  • This is Numbuh 1's first character specific episode, making him the 4th member of Sector V to get one.
  • This is the first appearance of Monty Uno.
  • Mr. Uno is the first parent of Sector V to have his face shown.
  • This is the first appearance of Willard Wallace.
  • This episode is the first in which only one member from Sector V appears.
  • Numbuh 1 can play the sousaphone moderately well, but doesn't enjoy listening to it.
  • There are no female characters in this episode, though a female voice can be heard while Mr. Uno is driving too slowly.
  • According to Tom Warburton, the idea behind the episode was to re-create Dueling Banjos from the movie Deliverance (1972), but with tubas.[1]
  • The voices of the other kids and parents at the lake are not credited.
  • Mr. Wallace getting milk from the store while Willard waited for him is likely a jab at the joke that fathers go to the store for milk and never come back.
  • This episode aired as a rerun of Codename: Kids Next Door on Cartoon Network on May 2, 2010 along with Operation: S.H.A.V.E., Operation: F.L.A.V.O.R., Operation: F.L.A.V.O.R. and Operation: K.I.S.S..

Production Notes[]

  • The episode title was spelled, "Operation: O.O.M.P.-P.A.H.", during storyboarding.[1]

Series Continuity[]

Pop Culture References[]

  • The way Numbuh 1 puts on his jacket and backpack is similar to the convoluted ways in which Wallace gets dressed in Wallace and Gromit.
  • Willard Wallace may be named after Mr. Willard Tweedy, the antagonist in Chicken Run, and the previously mentioned Wallace from Wallace and Gromit.

Errors/Goofs[]

  • Numbuh 1 and Mr. Uno was first shown in a boat alone in the middle of a lake, before they're suddenly next to a tall cliff and surrounded by other boats a minute later without moving.
  • The big bucket of dads is not visible on the pier before Willard gestures to it.
  • The rope that ties Mr. Uno's legs appear out of nowhere, and so does the hole in the pier underneath him.
  • The two stools Numbuh 1 and Willard kicked off the stage during their sousaphone battle reappear on stage right after the battle is over.
