Ninnies Almost Undo Greatest Holiday This Year

"Operation: N.A.U.G.H.T.Y." is the first episode of Season 5 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on December 6, 2005 on Cartoon Network and was the last episode aired in 2005.

Information[]

Plot[]

Santa's elves are joyfully working in a factory, making toys. They start singing a Christmas version of the Rainbow Monkey theme song, but an elf notices that another elf, named Wintergreen isn't singing. He says that it's not his job to sing, all he has to do is watch over the factory and make sure nothing goes wrong. Suddenly, a group of people burst into the factory, and is supposedly Sector V of the KND. They shoot tranquilizer darts at the elves, which make them fall asleep. Despite the fact that they are under attack, the elves stay happy and jolly. Wintergreen was willing to fight, only to get taken down by multiple darts. The scene ends when Santa gets shot with a tranquilizer dart too.

After the intro/theme song, the next scene shows Sector V aboard their spaceship, and it seems as if the raid upon Santa's workshop never occurred. Numbuh 3 is telling Numbuh 4 about the gift she got him, which she says he can't open until tomorrow morning when they exchange gifts. Numbuh 4 then starts to rub his neck in an act of nervousness, indicating that he didn't get Numbuh 3 a gift. Numbuh 3 then says to him, "Don't you like me?" When she asked that, she was talking about whether he liked her as a friend but then Numbuh 5 starts to tease Numbuh 4 since he has a crush on Numbuh 3. After Numbuh 3 firmly mentions that Numbuh 4 will just have to watch them exchange gifts, it is revealed that none of Sector V got Numbuh 3 a present either and are just as guilty as Numbuh 4 was. Poor Numbuh 3 felt sad that no one got her anything and she thought Numbuh 4 didn’t like Numbuh 3, who had a big crush on Numbuh 4, and she wanted to admit her crush on him so badly. By that point, they had reached their tree house but see that someone has cut it down.

The sector then encounters the Elfa Strike Team composed of elves from Santa's workshop. They claim to have cut down the treehouse and will only give it back if they are given back the reindeer. Numbuh 3 takes them to mean the gift that she got for Numbuh 4 and refuses to hand it over. Now, they must fight the Elfa Strike team. The Nutcracker, Snow Angel, and Coniferous take turns fighting the KND. It seems that the have won, but then Numbuh 3 gets mad at them for stealing Numbuh 4's gift.

Numbuh 3 defeats all the members of the Elfa Strike Team except for Wintergreen. Wintergreen then says that since it seems as if there is no other way to save Christmas, he summons the 12 days of Christmas to attack Numbuh 3. They all land on top of her and she is completely crushed. Defeated, she hands over Numbuh 4's gift to Wintergreen and tells him that she didn't steal it; she bought it for Numbuh 4. Wintergreen opens the gift, which turns out to be a Secret Santa Surprise Reindeer Monkey and Numbuh 4 was not happy when he got a rainbow monkey because Numbuh 3 knew that Numbuh 4 hated rainbow monkeys but she could not resist. Numbuh 5 blatantly reminds him, he didn't get Numbuh 3 anything so he should not be complaining.

Snow Angel then says that that particular Rainbow Monkey doll is only available on Christmas Eve at stores not the North Pole, and Wintergreen realizes Sector V couldn't have been at the North Pole today if they got one meaning they were innocent. Numbuh 5 confirms that they spent the whole day at the Rainbow Monkey Superstore waiting in line to get it. Then Nutcracker asks the important question, "Then if they didn't do it, then who has the reindeer?"

The scene then goes back to the raid on Santa's workshop where the apparent Sector V attacks Santa. They steal the reins of the REINDEER system and reveal themselves to be the Delightful Children From Down the Lane disguised as Sector V. They plan to use the REINDEER system to get all the presents for themselves while every other kid will get nothing but coal and frame Sector V! Santa warns them that he is the only person that can use the system, as the power will corrupt their minds but the DCFDTL don't care and they push him into a chasm. The REINDEER system is then shown to be a huge database with the faces of every child in the world. The system is magically connected to every tree in every house. All the DCFDTL have to do is choose who is naughty and who is nice. The nice kids instantaneously receive toys while the naughty kids receive coal. Using the reins acquired from Santa, they put themselves as the only nice children in the world, and everyone else as naughty. Gifts are then seen accumulating and overflowing their house while the presents from every house in the world turns into coal.

Sector V and the Elfa Strike team enter Santa's workshop and see the DCFDTL using the REINDEER system. However, the doors lock and they unable to interfere with the DCFDTL's plan. A substitute teacher named Edna Jucation appears and says that they have sided with the DCFDTL. She was mad that everyone knows about Christmas, but not Substitute Teachers Day, so she plans to help the DCFDTL so they could eliminate Christmas (except the part where the DCFDTL get presents), leaving Substitute Teachers Day as the world's most important holiday. Her gang, the Faculty 4 then attack the Elfa Strike Team. Sector V then finds another way to enter the locked room and they hear the Delightful Children saying, "Help us, help us." Their faces are shown and are green and disfigured, resembling the Grinch, proving that what Santa said about it corrupting their minds was true. Sector V then undoes everything the Delightful Children did, saving Christmas.

Meanwhile, Elfa Strike team defeat the Faculty 4, and demand that Edna gives up or they'll beat her up next (though she cowardly refuses to give up). Just as everything seemed to be taken care of, however, no one seems to notice Numbuh 3 taking control of the REINDEER system. Originally planning to use it to give more gifts to her friends, the REINDEER corrupts her and she starts feeling that she doesn't get any appreciation for her goodwill and care towards others and said, "Everyone's always like, 'Oh. I forgot to get Numbuh 3 a present.', or, 'I was off fighting adult tyranny.'". She says she deserves all the gifts in the world while everyone else gets coal for taking her selfless acts for granted. Numbuh 4 watched in horror at what is happening to Kuki. He yells her name out in despair and exclaims, "We gotta save her!". Santa appears, seeming to have escaped the chasm he was pushed into.

His strength allows him to tear the doors open. He then tells Numbuh 4 that he is the only one that can stop her. Numbuh 4 stutters and nervously asks if there is another way, to which Santa condescendingly replies that he would never send him in there if there was. Numbuh 5 pushes him inside where Numbuh 4 sees Kuki has transformed into a green-skinned Grinch figure. Wally slowly and nervously approached Kuki. He offers her a gift, telling her he wanted to surprise her on Christmas, but then she turned all evil. It turns out to be French fries Numbuh 4 was saving for later, and Numbuh 3 seemed to be getting madder. But it turns out she loves the gift and reverts to her original state and is very happy, saying: ā€œThis is the absolute… sweetest gift you ever got me. Wahhhh. It's also the only gift you ever got me. But who's counting. Aaahh.ā€

With only 5 minutes to spare, Santa uses the REINDEER system to accurately decide who has been naughty and who has been nice. Santa tells Sector V to head on home so that they can open their gifts as well. Numbuh 3 apologizes to Santa for trying to use the REINDEER system for her own selfish needs, but he forgives her. The episode ends with the Elfa Strike team apologizing to Sector V for thinking they stole the REINDEER and telling them they put the treehouse in the ice rink in the city, so all the children could enjoy it.

Ending credits

In the end credits, Kuki is shown clearing the toys from the top of her dresser to make room for the fries, blushing and smiling at them. A few seconds after she left the room, Wally sneaks in to eat more of the fries.

Trivia[]

  • Although this episode is chronologically the first of Season 5, it was the fifth episode of the season aired. The following four episodes would air before this episode, likely so the episode could air around the winter season.
  • The elves sing their own elf version of The Rainbow Monkey Song called Rainbow Christmas.
  • This episode shows that the Delightful Children from Down the Lane and the members of Sector V share similar body types as the Delightful Children were able to disguise themselves as Sector V and frame them during their invasion of Santa's workshop:
    • Lenny (football helmet kid) is similar to Nigel in height, and his helmet could pass as Nigel’s bald head.
    • Constance (short girl with glasses) is similar to Hoagie (both are fat).
    • Alessandra (blonde girl with the bow) is similar to Kuki (both have similar hairstyles and are at similar heights).
    • Bruce (short blond boy) is similar to Wallabee (both have blonde bowl-cuts).
    • David (tall brown-haired boy) is similar to Abigail (both have covered eyes).
  • This episode is one of the major displays of Kuki and Wallabee's crushes on each other:
    • Kuki claims she saved the best gift for Wallabee, and she had waited in a line all day to get it and is shown blushing.
    • When she says: "And I saved the best one for youuuu", it looks like she is puckering her lips to kiss him.
    • When it is revealed that Wallabee didn't get Kuki a Christmas gift, Kuki sadly asked, "Don’t tell me you didn’t get me a present again? Don't you like me?". Abigail then turns around in her chair behind them and teasingly asks, "Yeah Numbuh 4, don't you LIKE Numbuh 3?", and Wallabee, who wanted to say that he did, avoids the questions by nervously stuffing french fries in his mouth.
    • When she is transformed into the Grinch-like monster, Santa and the team send Wallabee to save her, and he brings her back to her normal state by giving her a present - his left-over fries.
    • Kuki tackles Wallabee with a hug, which sort of admitted her crush on him, after she is turned back, saying: "This is the absolute sweetest gift you ever got me! It's also the only gift you ever got me, but who's counting?" to which Wallabee blushes and struggles to get away but to no avail as Kuki held Wally in her arms.
    • Santa comes over and tell them, "Alright. you two. Take it under the mistletoe!"
    • Kuki was very protective of her present for Wallabee since she had a big crush on him and was protective of it.
    • Also, in the end credits, Kuki is shown clearing off the top of her dresser to make room for the fries, blushing and smiling at them when she finished.
  • This is the last episode to have debuted in 2005.
  • This is the only KND Christmas special, which explains the title sequence of this episode is holiday themed, with a green background and snow.
  • This is the last regular episode written by Mo Willems, which is possible because of being the first episode produced for season 5.
  • In a 2016 MomoCon interview panel for KND, Ben Diskin and Cree Summer reveal that Tom Kenny had messed up one of his lines (as Santa Claus), saying "Take her under the mistletoe," instead of "Take it under the mistletoe". The crew's reaction to the joke was a mix of mild shock, though Tom made the situation even more awkward by building on the joke. (47:59 is where the joke occurs)
    • In the episode itself, Santa is played by Dee Bradley Baker, not Tom Kenny. It's likely that Tom was recast during post-production and Dee recorded the part when doing pickups for Numbuh 4.
  • This episode released on December 6, 2005, so this episode was released on Codename: Kids Next Door's 3rd anniversary.
  • This special was included in Cartoon Network’s Happy Holidays from Cartoon Network YouTube live stream as the 10th episode following other classics like Dexter’s Lab, Billy and Mandy, Chowder, etc.

Series continuity[]

  • This is the second time the Sector V treehouse has been cut down; last time was back in Operation: E.N.D..
  • Numbuh 2 states that the Sector V's treehouse was 560 years old, based on its rings. It's unknown how this plays into the information given about the treehouse through the series, with it originating in England (Operation: Z.E.R.O.), but the treehouse was not present in Numbuh 1's house prior to him joining the KND.
  • Numbuh 5 fights the Nutcracker, her second German-speaking opponent, and second German-speaking character in the series. Her nemesis, Heinrich Von Marzipan, also speaks German.

Cultural references[]

  • Many of the holiday related characters and overall setting are parodies of the Marvel Comics universe. The narrator is even akin to the famous comic creator, Stan Lee, especially with his use of the phrase "true believers".[1]
    • The parodies are as shown:
      • Elfa Strike - X-Men
      • Faculty 4 - Fantastic Four
        • Thesaurus Rex - The Thing
        • Unintelligible Tutor - Invisible Woman
        • Human Text - Human Torch
        • Mr. Physically Fitastic - Mr. Fantastic
        • A film based on the Fantastic Four starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis came out earlier in 2005.
      • The REINDEER System - Cerebro
  • The idea of a team of X-Men-like heroes teaming up with a group of younger heroes makes the episode similar to The Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans comic. The plot also resembles The 'Dark Pheonix saga, in which X-Men member Jean Grey (also known as Marvel Girl, Pheonix, and Dark Pheonix) is driven mad with power and her lover, Cyclops (the X-Men's field leader), tries to bring her to her senses. Coincidentally, the former happened because of the latter.
  • The Partridge in a pear tree from the 12 Days of Christmas Attack is actually Danny Partridge from ā€œThe Partridge Familyā€.
  • Wintergreen makes a reference to The Nightmare Before Christmas, a 1993 animated film.
  • Wintergreen's bones are made out of Peppermintium, a parody of the fictional metal "adamantium".
  • When the Faculty Four is defeated, Edna Jucation briefly threatens calling in the "Arbor-Day Avengers" for backup. They would likely be based off of the Marvel Comics team, the Avengers.
  • When Wintergreen throws Numbuh One over the rest of Sector V to go stop the Delightful Children, this could be a nod to the classic X-Men move, the "Fastball Special", where Colossus throws Wolverine at an enemy.
  • When the DCFDTL and Kuki were over-powered by the REINDEER, they grew green fur on their faces and their eyes turn yellow with red irises. This is likely a reference to the titular Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
  • The narrator's description of Snow Angel is a parody of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
  • Other holidays mentioned by Sector V and the Elfa Strike Squad to be as important include Groundhog Day (which was mentioned by Numbuh 3), the Fourth of July (which Numbuh 4 misdates as the Fourth of August), and Flag Day (which Snow Angel loves).
  • The way the REINDEER system quickly corrupts Numbuh 3 might be a reference to how the one Ring from Lord of the Rings corrupts its owners.

Goofs[]

  • Interestingly, the S.C.A.M.P.P., W.H.A.T., and D.O.O.Z.I.E. are referred to by their production names when they appear in the comic. (Phlazer, Headset, and Blast-O-Matic respectively)
  • While the elves are singing the last of their song ("... is tonight"), the "camera" pulls out twice to reveal more of the workshop. On the first pull, there are no elves near the door up the stairs on the left or on the right side by the boxes. Additionally, the train in the back disappears in the first pull back, but reappears in the second pull back.
  • When "Numbuh 3" shoots the last elf, she and "Numbuh 5" are not standing anywhere close to the rest of the team. But in the following shot, they are suddenly all standing as a group.
  • When "Sector V" first appears, "Numbuh 5" is holding two dart guns. But she is only holding one gun when "Numbuh 3" shoots the last elf, before holding two guns again after the attack is done.
  • The table in the middle of the workshop changes size between scenes.
  • There are no red stockings hanging on the fireplace while the elves are singing, but there are two stockings there after the attack is done.
  • By pulling the stocking, they stop the fire in the fireplace, but prior to this shot there was a log and some metal stuff inside of the fireplace. These additional items have disappeared before "Numbuh 5" pulls the stocking.
  • When inside of the S.C.A.M.P.E.R., Numbuh 1 sits almost right between Numbuh 4 and 5, but is not visible in the background when Numbuh 4 is angry with Numbuh 5.
  • Numbuh 2 would have been able to see that the treehouse has been cut down, so it's only for plot and shock value that he didn't notice it before landing.
  • When the DCFDTL take off their helmets, they're still wearing the rest of their disguises. But in the following close-up shot, the disguises have disappeared.
  • Also, the blond girl still has black hair after she takes off her helmet.
  • When the DCFDTL say "We are good children", the short girl's hair is miscolored.
  • When Numbuh 3 walks towards the sleigh, there are no other footprints in the snow, despite the DCFDTL making prints earlier.
  • Numbuh 4 sees Numbuh 3 levitating inside of Santa's chamber through a window in the door, despite there not being a window there before.
