Information[]

Overview[]

Numbuh 3 stars in a romantic '50's-style musical as the lead girl, but when Numbuh 4 interrupts the play, it becomes a real fight on stage between the DCFDTL and the KND.

Synopsis[]

The episode starts with Numbuh 3 singing a song on a street at night about supposedly being in love with someone who she's never truly met (called "I'm So In Love"), after which she is shown in a bar scene. She is confronted by Numbuhs 1, 2, and 5, who warn her that it's a dangerous world, especially since they are currently in the midst of a gang war. She asks them why they are fighting, which leads to another musical number sung by them and the bar patrons - kids from Gallagher Elementary and the KND (called "We're Us and They're Them"). She ignores the warning and claims she doesn't care, that she needs to "listen to her heart" and find the boy of her dreams. She runs outside to the street scene, searching for her love, who emerges from the shadows - 'he' is actually the Delightful Children From Down the Lane dressed in an over-sized leather jacket.

Right before a kiss scene between Numbuh 3 and the Delightfuls, Numbuh 4 bursts through the backdrop and confronts her, saying that she's nuts for even considering kissing them. She tries to interrupt, but he goes on, almost revealing he loves her, until he notices that there is an audience, and says instead, "What are my parents doing here?", to which the viewer is shown an auditorium filled with adults, most likely parents, with Mr. and Mrs. Beetles waving to Numbuh 4 (with their faces hidden by programs).

Numbuh 1 tells him that, "they're here to see the school play". Numbuh 4 is dumbfounded because he thought (as the viewer up to this point thought) that the entire thing was for real, and had no clue it was a play. This angers Numbuh 3, yelling at Numbuh 4 for ruining her big finale. The Delightfuls then reveal a master plot to destroy the rest of the cast so they would win the Best Actor award with no competition. They have the Really Really Incredibly Destructive Machine with them to destroy everyone, they had bribed the director to get it on stage and be cast in the lead. Numbuh 2 was about to say that he has a better singing than the Delightful Children until they told him to shut up and the Delightfuls got mad and said, “Aah! To think of the weeks and weeks we spent pretending to like Kuki just to prepare our plan,”. Right before firing a laser, Numbuh 3 runs in front of them and says, "Wait! Can't we please just sing the final number first?" They respond, “no”, and start attacking everyone. Sector V takes over and (along with the kids) try to dance out of the way of the lasers. Numbuh 2 uses lasers from inside the lights to attack the Delightful Children but their machine has a shield. During all this, the audience believes the fight is part of the play, not realizing their kids are in danger. One parent comments that the production values are, "much better than last year", another saying, "That's my little girl up there avoiding deathly lasers!".

Meanwhile, Numbuh 3 once again attempts to sing the finale duet by herself, but no one can hear her over the lasers and screaming. Numbuh 4 narrowly saves her from getting hit by a laser. She angrily insists that she has to finish her song first, however both of them are hit by a laser, after which she says, "Maybe I can wait a little longer..." and falls unconscious with Numbuh 4.

Before the Delightful Children could blast Numbuh 1, he tells them they should take their show on the road because they are smashed. They correct him by clarifying the theatrical expression is a "smash" (meaning a hit) and they then get crushed by the stage lights. Numbuh 1 says: "That is not the expression I was thinkg of", and then remembers the audience is still there. His dad, in the far back, begins clapping, and the rest of the audience follows his lead, applauding the cast.

In the next scene, we see an empty auditorium except for Numbuh 3 sitting on the edge of the stage, sobbing. Numbuh 4 comes over to tell her everyone is going to Lime Ricky's Bar to celebrate. Wally invites her to come, but he saw she looked sad. He walked over and asks her why she's upset and he comforts Kuki by gently placing his hand on her shoulder. Kuki explains that she's glad they defeated the DCFDTL, but she just wanted to get to sing her big duet before the battle. Feeling guilty, he offers to sing it with her. Kuki beamed with joy and she asks: "You will!?" She was thrilled and excited to sing her love duet with her crush and her true love. Wally begins to hesitate and says: "Well t-th-that depends, what's it called?", to which she replies: "It's called, 'It's So Lovey The Lovey The Lovey Dovey Wuvey!"

He yells, "NO WAY!", because the duet sounds girly and Wally was afraid that Kuki would tell someone about it and he didn’t trust her. Numbuh 3 starts bawling and nearly got Numbuh 4 wet, which makes Numbuh 4, who felt bad for hurting Numbuh 3’s feelings, relent and does it anyway. Kuki was delighted and Numbuh 3 even promises not to tell anyone what Numbuh 4 is doing is for her. She knows all her lines and dances around, while he stands humiliated with the script in his hand, saying his line in a monotone. He only gets through one line before leaving the stage, saying, "Ah, forget this crud!"; Numbuh 3 chases after him, telling him to come back and calling him adorable.

Trivia[]

  • This is the fifth "art" episode of Codename: Kids Next Door; the previous ones are: Operation: T.H.E.-F.L.Y. (Season 1), Operation: R.E.P.O.R.T. (Season 2), Operation: A.R.C.H.I.V.E. (Season 3), and Operation: F.O.O.D.F.I.T.E. (Season 4), and the next one is: Operation: S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (Season 6).
  • This is the third time Numbuh 4 sings, though earlier he has only been singing Numbuh 4's Song.
  • This is the only episode to feature more than one song.
  • Most of the background characters in the show are either Gallagher Students, or KND Doctors & Nurses (as their character models will be reused for them in the next season).
  • When Numbuh 4 ruined the school play, he tried to tell Kuki that he loved her, but asked, "What are my parents doing here?".
  • In the stage for the second number, the wall on the bar reads "KaNDy store". This implies that the KND may have been part of the production team, rather than just the members themselves being in it.
  • The three musical numbers in the play were as follows, in this order:
  • This is one of the many times that Numbuh 3's hands are shown.
  • It's possible that Numbuh 4 has no interest in performing, since he didn't even care that he was interrupting the school play (he also didn't even know anything about it either).
  • This episode is also considered a Valentine's Day episode even though this episode aired in July.
  • The songs were composed by Steve Rucker, and written by Mo Willems and Mr. Warburton.[1]
  • According to the Beetles' playbill, the school play is titled, "WLT 5IVE SING".
  • It's only when Numbuh 3 and the DCFDTL are about to kiss that we can see stage items in the background.
  • Numbuh 3's character is not addressed by name. Instead, she is called "Toots", a derogatory post-World War II slang term for a girl.

Series continuity[]

  • Despite Mr. Beetle's face reveal back in Operation: M.A.T.A.D.O.R., his and his wife's faces are hidden in this episode.
  • The real Mrs. Fulbright makes her first and only on-screen appearance in the crowd. A fake version of her appeared in Operation: S.L.U.M.B.E.R..

Cultural references[]

  • The school play and most of the dance numbers are parodies of the musical West Side Story, where Numbuh 3 plays Maria and the DCFDTL play Tony.
    • Both plays are about two gangs fighting and Numbuh 3's character is in love with someone from the rival gang.
    • Both shows take place in the 1950's as shown by everyone's style.
    • Numbuh 2 briefly describes himself (and Numbuhs 1 and 5 by extension) as a "jet", referring to the "Jets" gang.
    • The "We're Us and They're Them" song appears to be based on "Jet Song".

Goofs[]

  • When the lights turn on, Numbuh 3 has a group of kids on each side. After the one kid asks her about the time and she starts moving, the groups have changed and even the kids in the groups have been changed.
  • The bartender is not there when the lights turn on, but he is there once Numbuh 3 starts moving.
  • When Numbuh 3 starts moving towards the door, there is a wall on the left side where the audience should be. This was probably done to keep the surprise hidden until later, but would get in the way of the show for the parents.
  • When it zooms out to reveal Numbuh 1, 2, and 5 by the door, Numbuh 5's hair braid is missing, even though it appeared a second ago in her first close-up shot.
  • The kids sitting by the bar during the second dance number change between shots.
  • The kid who previously asked Numbuh 3 about the time appears twice by the bar when she sings.
  • When the group starts running towards Numbuh 3 in the dance number, the bar is considerably longer than earlier.
  • When Numbuh 3 dances through the group, the kid she has a short dance with appears again further back in the crowd.
  • It's never explained how Numbuh 4 knew Numbuh 3 was about to kiss the DCFDTL while at the other side of the wall, and somehow didn't notice he was on a stage.
  • David (of the DCFDTL) is shown wearing pink pants when Numbuh 4 is picking up the DCFDTL, when he should be wearing blue pants like the other boys in the group. His pants change back to blue afterwards.
  • Eggbert enters to the left of Numbuh 4, but has ended up on the right side after the reveal of the audience.
  • The big hotel prop wall was not present during the show prior to its reveal to change into a robot.
  • All of the prop walls on stage are missing during the reveal of the robot, but return afterwards.
  • When Numbuh 2 says, "when you're a jet, you're a jet", the backside of his shirt changes color to match the vest that he just took off. It changes back when he turns to blast off. His skin color also changes during this error.
  • When Numbuh 2 goes up to the lights, the kids shirt is black but when Numbuh 2 tells him his services aren't needed, his shirt changes to orange.
  • The adults in the audience can be seen sitting in several different places through the episode.
  • As Numbuh 4 is approaching Numbuh 3 on stage after the show, the prop walls in the back are gray instead of reddish brown.
